Visual Inspection Definition

For the purpose of this ITP the Visual Inspection will be divided into two separate levels of visual inspection: The lower level will be referred to as Visual scanning and the Higher more detailed level will be referred to as Visual scanning, both defined as follows: Visual Scanning: Is a visual look over the materials and work area to look for obvious defects, poor quality

workmanship, or items missed, poor condition materials etc This may include such items as material damage, surface defects, no identification, poor weld preparation, wrong orientation of parts, gross weld defects, weld spatter, sharp edges, paint runs or missed areas, etc.

Visual Examination: This will include a detailed examination of the work area to check that the manufactured item

meets the technical requirements. The following list gives a good example of what should be checked when doing a visual examination. Dimensions, Gauge, Angles, Penetration, Fusion, Undercut, Over roll, Cracks, Shrinkage grooves, Alignment, Overlap, Surface pores/condition, Heat numbers, Lot numbers, batch numbers, colors etc. All visual examination requirements will be to meet the technical requirements.
