A

Lemmings are small mouse-like animals found only in northern Scandinavia. They live on small plants and roots, and build nests under the ground. For most of the time they lead the kind of life that one would expect such an animal to live.

Lemmings usually stay away from water, but when there are so many lemmings that there is not enough food for them, they set out to find food. As they cross the countryside, they destroy everything that gets in their way or that they can eat. They swim across rivers and lakes, and just keep on going until they reach the sea. Then, without stopping, they continue into the water and swim out to sea. At last they become so tired that they cannot continue to swim, and they drown.

For most animals, staying alive is the most important thing. Behaving in a way that causes their death makes no sense. Lemmings are the only animals known to behave in this way. Whales sometimes get stuck on beaches, but they do this when they make a mistake about their position.

There are many explanations for the lemmings’ strange behavior. The popular explanation seems to be that the lemmings do not realize they are in the sea; they think they are in a river or lake and have no idea how far they swim. If this is so, then it is surprising that they cannot tell the difference between salt and fresh water!

61. the story is about a kind of animal that_________

D. when some animals try to kill them for food No one___________________ A. ever sees the lemmings drown

Most painters discover a style of painting that suits them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.

Some of Picasso’s paintings are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves, “What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look beneath the surface of the things we see.

Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eye sees. At the age of 90 he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world”.

66. In the passage the writer wants to tell us______. A. about some pictures which have different styles. B. About Picasso’s style of painting

C. That it is not easy for a painter to find his own style D. That Picasso had not found his own particular style

67. The ugly, cruel and strange paintings by Picasso_______. A. make us try to notice something latent(潜在的) in the things. B. Allow us to ask questions about them C. Force us to question anything we see

D. Cause us to think what Picasso saw was different from what we see

68. The underlined sentence “Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces.” in Paragraph 3 means_______. A. Sometimes he tore his pictures into pieces

B. He broke something he was painting and threw them away. C. Sometimes he showed some broken pictures to others. D. Things in some of his pictures seemed to be in disorder.

69. The reason why people have called Picasso “ the youngest painter in the world” is that______. A. He looked young when he was old

B. He observed things with the eye and the mind C. He never stopped painting even when he was old D. He never gave up looking for something new

70. What do you suppose the writer thinks of Picasso’s paintings? A. He doesn’t understand some of them

B. He thinks some of them are valuable, some are not. C. He admires them, including the ugly ones

D. He doesn’t like some of them, but he admires the painter

C

My son and I were trying to sell the house we had repaired, but in the barn (谷仓) there were bats and they would not leave. The barn was their home. They told us so in their own way they hung for the season. “Don’t worry about it, Dad.” Patrick said. “They keep down the mosquitoes (蚊子).”

Unfortunately they also kept the buyers away. When we had asked a person to sell the house for us he had refused to show it because of the bats. “Bats are popular,” Patrick comforted me. “They are ecological (生态的) .” “Isn’t there a machine you can buy that produces high-frequency sounds to keep bats away?” “ I don’t know,” said Patrick. “But I like bats, and whoever buys this house will probably like them too.’ “Probably?” I hated that word. “How many bats are there, anyway?” “I counted about 90 last night,” said Patrick. “They were dropping out from under the edge of the roof.” “You mean there are more------outside?” “They’re everywhere, Dad. But look at it this way. When the cold weather comes, they’ll be off to Mexico. Maybe in the spring we can keep them out. Don’t worry about it,” he

said for the hundredth time. “It’s not a problem.”

The bat expert I called was even more active than Patrick. “I think you’ve got a large number there,” he said in wonder. “I’ve been trying to attract bats to our house for 25 years. A single bat ears up his weight in mosquitoes and black flies three times every night. You’ve a very lucky man.” I offered to share my luck with him. He could take them away. “Bats have a remarkable homing instinct (本能) ,” he said. “They’d fly straight back even if I transported them 100 miles. Once they have settled, you can’t stop them from coming back.” I was silent.

Finally we managed to rent the house to a young family, who were also interested in buying it. “What about the bats?” I said to Patrick. “Oh, they love the bats,” he said. “No mosquitoes. No black flies. It’s one of the things that attracted them.” “Do you think they will really buy the house?” “Probably? Well, if they do, I suppose I’ll have to admit that I was wrong.” “You mean you’re going to eat your words?”

“Yes. I am.”

71. What was the problem the author had with his house?

A. Bats were living in the barn and wouldn’t go away. B. The author and his son couldn’t sleep well because of the bats C. The author and his son might be able to stay for the season. D. The house was still badly in need of repair.

72. What did Patrick suggest the author should do to stop the bats living in the barn?

A. Buy a high-frequency machine. B. Move them one hundred miles away. C. Reduce the number of mosquitoes. D. Close the barn in the spring.

73. Why did the author fall silent when he talked with the bat specialist?

A. He felt sure about the situation. B. He found that it would be impossible to remove the bats. C. He learned that he would be able to share his luck with the expert. D. He liked the advice given by the expert.

74. What happened to the house in the end?

A. Some people agreed to rent the house. B. The author failed to find anybody who wanted to live in the house C. The bat expert made the decision to buy the house. D. The bats left the house for Mexico in the spring.

75. Why did the author think he might have to “eat his words”?

A. He felt sorry for the bats. B. He might be mistaken about being unable to sell the house. C. He realized the might be wrong about the bats’ actions D. He was happy about selling the house.

D

If there is no difference in general intelligence(智力)between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?

It seems to be that their treatment at school is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine(女性的) and attractive.

However, if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be world-wide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.

Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are enoouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding(杰出的)mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.

Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence(信心)that they are able to succeed.

Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls. 76.Girls are likely to think that . A.science courses are for both boys and girls B.science courses make them more popular C.science courses make them successful D.science courses are difficult for them

77.The text mainly discusses________ reasons for the difference between boys and girls in scientific

achievements. A.biological B.historical C.social D.personal 78.What are boys usually encouraged to do at school? A.To get help with their homework.. B.To play the leading role in class. C.To work with girl students in class. D.To learn to take care of others.

79.What does the passage say about great mathematicians? A.Their teachers did not supply answers to them. B.They started learning mathematics at an earlier age. C.They showed mathematical abilities in their teenage years. D.Their success resulted from their strong interest in mathematics. 80.The author would probably agree that . A.boys and girls learn in the same way B.boys and girls are equal in general intelligence C.girls are more confident in themselves than before D.girls should take fewer science courses than boys
