Although many people read online, books have not gone out of fashion. In Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, lucky passengers may find books somewhere on the underground.

The Fair, an online publishing company, has put 10,000 books on the underground, planes and taxis to make people more interested in reading. This project is called “Mobook”.

“Mobook” gets its idea from “Books on the Underground”, a community project in London. The purpose of “Books on the Underground” is to encourage people to read more. Zhang Wei, the CEO of the Fair also wanted to do something in China. He sent an e-mail to Ms Cordelia Oxley, the leader of “Books on the Underground”, describing his plan and explaining the rulers of “Mobook”. The leader replied to him in just two hours, saying that she thought the idea was great and she would offer help if needed.

But “Mobook” project is a little different from that in London. It has its own online system. People who want to donate books must give their information online. QR code stickers(二维码标签) are then sent to their addresses. The book owners should stick them on the books before donating books and readers can know where the books are from with the help of QR codes.

“Mobook” is a hot topic. Now thousands of bookworms have already taken part in the project. Zhang Wei said, “I am happy to see more and more

In ancient China, it was common that the eldest son should look after the parents. But Confucius' elder brother was disabled, so Confucius(孔子) had to take care of his mother till she died in 535 BC. One of his teachings was that a person should feel or express great sadness for their parents' death for three years. The reason was that they looked after the child completely until it was three. Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills

more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.

One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol-4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker.”

The “Sol-4” works by reflecting(反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct(把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.

The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without

第 17 页

having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such people would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.

At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.

Each cooker costs about $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment. 根据短文内容回答下列问题。 1.What is “Sol-4”?

The Silk Road is a historically important

international trade line between China and the

第 18 页

Mediterranean(地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years.

The ancient road started from Chang'an(Xi'an) and ended in Eastern Europe, near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6,500 kilometers long and went across one-fourth of the planet.

The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food like carrots.

The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade line. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well as crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.

Today, China is trying to build the “21st Century Marine(海洋的) Silk Road”. With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2019, the dream of One Road(the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Marine Silk Road”) (“一带一路”) is coming true. 根据短文内容回答下列问题。 1.When did the Silk Road begin?

In the USA, each year, students take part in a

kind of competition called the Science Olympiad. It has a lot of different events. Students go there to show how much they know about the science of music, biology, chemistry and others. My best event is forestry(林学).

The big day had come at last! First, I went to watch the tower building competition. That's when students build small towers and put heavy things on top of it. They hope they can hold them up. One of my schoolmates was putting things on her tower. She was nervous, and in the end it was too heavy for her tower to hold it—it broke! I felt bad for her.

After lunch, I helped some teammates with their events. One was geography, and the other was history. I don't know about those things, so I just watched my teammates do most of the work.

At last, it was time for my favorite event—forestry. The rules were easy. We had to look at more than 40 different kinds of leaves and find out which plants they were from. We also had to answer most of the questions about the uses of each leaf. I knew almost all of the leaves and could answer most of the questions. I had spent more than a month studying on the Internet to get ready. In the end, it was time for the awards(颁奖). I was nervous, because the forestry awards were last. A 108-year-old Message in a Bottle

On November 30,1906,George Bidder dropped

a bottle from a boat into the North Sea. The weighted

第 25 页

glass bottle sank almost to the sea floor, and then it moved slowly for 108 years and 138 days.

Its journey ended when Marianne Winkler found the bottle in 2019. Winkler was then on vacation on Amrum Island. She picked up the bottle when it was washed up onto the beach. She saw a piece of paper inside, but didn't break it open. she should tell that the bottle was old, so she didn't want to damage it.

Finally she got the piece of paper out of the bottle. She found that the paper was actually a postcard. On the back of the card was this massage: The Marine Biological Association(海洋生物学协会) would pay a shilling(先令) for the bottle. A shilling was a unit of money that was used in Great Britain before the early 1970s.

Winkler filled out the card and posted it. The association was surprised to get a postcard addressed to George Bidder, the president of the association from 1939 to 1945. The workers of the association searched

on the Internet to find a shilling. They found one and sent it to Winkler as a reward.

The message in the bottle was the oldest ever re-discovered. For this reason Marianne Winkler got a place in “Guinness World Records(吉尼斯世界纪录)”. She broke the record for the oldest message in a bottle.

Winkler's bottle was not the only one Bidder sent to sea. Between 1904 and 1906, he sent away more than one thousand bottles. He placed postcards inside them. The bottles were part of a research project to map currents(洋流)

in the North Sea. This was the best method at that time. But whether the association could get the bottles back depended on the people who found them. The association reported that about 55 percent of the bottles were returned.
