Jane Addams was born into a rich American family with a long history of public service on September 6, 1860. She was the eighth child of John Huy Addams, a successful businessman, banker, and landowner. Learning from her father, Jane wanted to know what she could do to help others. In 18, Jane and her friend Ellen Gates made Jane's dream come true. They opened Hull

House in Chicago. Among its many activities, Hull House provided a place for poor immigrant(移 民) families to play games, listen to poem readings or take music or painting classes.

Jane Addam's public service didn't stop with Hull House. Jane worked for laws to end child labor(劳动力) and fought for women's rights( 权利). She worked as president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and was chairman of the Women's Peace Party. Jane Addams won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. She died on May 21, 1935. Without planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can fill public places that are also enjoyed by people living in that country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become angry and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy( 经济). It is important to think about the people of a destination(目的地) country and what tourism brings them. Tourism should help a country keep the culture and beauty that tourists are interested in. Tourism should also improve the well-being ( health and happiness) of people living in the country.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism companies. This means that other parts of the country's economy may not develop as well as before.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads, and

other support facilities (辅助设施)needed. For example, an international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including the roads to get to the hotel, electricity (电), stations to deal with waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are no enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

49. The underlined word \"inhabitants\" in the first paragraph means ____________. A. people living there B. people in the government C. people love travelling D. businessman there

50. In the first paragraph, the reason to cause the tourism problem is __________. A. too many people. B. too much traffic. C. tourism without plan D. too much tourism

51. What is the writer's attitude(态度) towards tourism? A. People should be polite to tourists and treat them well. B. People should develop each part of the country's economy.

C. People should not spend lots of money building support facilities. D. Tourism should care about the country as well as the people there. 52. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Making money through developing tourism. B. Using support facilities as much as possible.

C. Creating enough tourism to meet needs of the people. D. Planning tourism and making it not too much or too little.

Some schools are named after famous people. 53 Some school names are most unusual. How they were chosen is anyone's guess.

There are schools with names that would make a person think twice before opening the door. The school named Lookout at least warns pupils in advance. A school in Oregon is named Tenkiller. 54

Not all unusual school names are strange in a fearful (可怕的) way. 55 Who would not feel at home in the school named Welcome? What could go wrong in the school called Allgood? The Bright School, located in Montana, seems to promise that much learning will take place. Other schools have names neither pleasant nor fearful. 56 There are schools with names such as Telephone, and Ducktown. For names to make us smile, what can match Bushyhead in the state of Georgia?

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10 分,每小题2 分。)

Have you heard about \"Survival (生存) Holidays\"? \"Survival Holidays\" is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents.

The reason why people like \"Survival Holidays\" is that they think being close to nature is

good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. \"Survival Holidays\" gives them an important change.

Is \"Survival Holidays\" a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are

controlled by adults, but children don't know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them. Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will

still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. All these skills will help them a lot in their lives.

58. Is \"Survival Holidays\" for children or parents? 59. Why do people like \"Survival Holidays\"?

is very popular among the students and many people in the city are interested in it as well. So, we also need some students to send the papers. Good marks are a must for working on the paper. There is some money for you according to how much work you do for the paper, but don't expect to get rich. This isn't something you do for the money. Mostly it's just for fun. Anyone who is

interested in joining us should speak to me after this meeting. Be ready to start working right away. Thank you for listening.
