A study published Monday found that people who sleep less tend to be fat, and experts said it's time to find if more sleep will fight obesity(肥胖).
\"We've put so much emphasis on diet and exercise that we've failed to recognize the value of good sleep,\" said Fred Turek, a physician at Northwestern University.
Monday's study from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk covered 1,000 people and found that total sleep time decreased as body mass index -- a measure of weight based on height -- increased.
Men slept an average of 27 minutes less than women and overweight and fat patients slept less than patients with normal weights, it said. In general the fatter subjects slept about 1.8 hours a week less than those with normal weights.
\"Americans experience insufficient(not enough) sleep and fat bodies. Doctors are aware of the burden of obesity on patients,\" the study said.
\"Our findings suggest that much more sleep time may not be necessary, as an extra 20 minutes of sleep per night seems to be related with a lower body mass index,\" it added.
\"This study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between limited sleep and
obesity but investigations demonstrating success in weight loss via more sleep would help greatly to establish such a relationship.\"
Obesity has been rising dramatically in developed countries and reached epidemic levels in the United States, leading to a variety of health problems.
56. According to Fred Turek, people should put more emphasis on _________ in
losing weight.
A. diet B. exercise C. good sleep D. health 57. The study suggest that _____________________.
A. in order to lose weight, one has to sleep much longer than usual.
B. one doesn’t have to get much more sleeping time to stay thin. C. an extra 20 minutes sleep per night may lead to weight gaining. D. the reduction of sleep will surely lead to weight loss. 58. According to the study, which of the following is true? A. Fat people tend to sleep less.
B. Women sleep less than men on average.
C. The more people sleep, the fatter they may become. D. Obesity is no longer a problem in developed countries.
59. Which of the statements is Not true according to the passage? A. Total sleep time decreased as body mass index increased.
B. Experts are trying to find out if more sleep will fight obesity. C. Obesity can lead to a variety of health problems.
D. Among the 1000 subjects, the fatter slept more than those with normal
weights.
B Laziness -- it is a word that brings with it judgment, sadness and disappointment. But laziness is a value that I think is extremely undervalued in our society, and laziness is a quality that is important to the entire structure of our culture. I encourage more people to strive toward laziness. For example, have you ever thought of the fact that most inventions may have been owed to
laziness? It's simple to picture: Someone has to perform a task, but fears the long, boring process. He or she starts wondering if there is an easier way to get this baby fixed in a shorter time and with less effort. Next thing you know: an invention is born. A new, revolutionary design is developed. Conclusion: lazy people are creative. Inventors are so lazy that instead of doing things in the usual manner, they come up with a way to achieve the most by doing the minimum.
Think of it! What a wonderful thing to be lazy! At the very least think of all the cash you will save when you become lazy! First of all, because of your refusal to ever leave your home, you will
save money on gas and parking, not to mention oil changes, new tires and other items of upkeep one who \"uses\" their car will have to deal with. Your chances of death by a car accident go down; in fact, I'd venture(冒昧) to say your chance of death will be lower, the longer you stay indoors; nothing from the outside world can hurt you! And since you probably won't slip in the shower (since you won't bathe often,) choking is your only concern! 60. What is the likely title for this passage?
A. Try not to be lazy any longer.
B. Maybe Laziness Isn't So Bad After All. C. What is laziness?
D. Laziness should not be encouraged.
61. In the author’s opinion, it is __________ that leads to many inventions. A. hard work B. creativity C. laziness D. time and efforts
62. Lazy people are not willing to do things in the usual way; instead they will try to
_________________.
A. give up everything B. get everything by doing nothing C. leave everything undone
D. find a way to gain the most by doing the least
63. Which of the following is not among the list of benefits from laziness?
A. Lazy people don’t bathe often
B. Lazy people can save money on gas and parking as a driver. C. Lazy people can lower the chance of death in traffic accidents. D. Many inventors may be born from laziness.
. The underlined word “upkeep” in the second paragraph most probably means
_________________________.
A. 维修/保养费 B. 保持 C. 提高 D. 起重

Dear Mary,
I live in Michigan, northeast of U.S.A.I like the fall here; all of the trees change color from green to buff, yellow, red and so on... It's very amazing since I never saw it before in China. We had a color tour in north Michigan last week. We took some pictures and had a lot of fun there.
I don't like winter, because winter is very cold here. But I think the first snow will surprise me. I never saw such a heavy snow before. I will enjoy the rest fall before winter comes.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to Rochester Municipal Park near my apartment with my friends. We took a walk there. The scenery there is very great. A creek( a small river) goes through this park and a lot of ducks are in the creek. And a lot of squirrels plays and seeks food on the ground. They are so cute. The squirrels there are not very afraid of human. I took a series of pictures of the whole climbing of a squirrel. It was the first time that I had photoed a squirrel in such a close distance.
I take some ESL classes here. A class is free in church. Another class just symbolically charged 25$ a session. The teachers there are very nice! My teacher in church picked me up and drove me back in the whole first month. It’s very kind of her.
I get something new to me everyday! It is very helpful!
I enjoy my life here and I'd like to share my life with all of you! Have a nice weekend!
Sincerely
Jane

\"I should have written to you a long time ago, but after my return to New York, I got involved in the usual rush and only now I have got my breath back to write you in detail. I would like to thank you on behalf of our whole group and myself for the wonderful arrangements that TCI made for us during our visit to India from March 3rd to 15th.
Everywhere we went, your staff were always there, waiting with a placard and we immediately felt welcome. Even in the remotest part of our trip in Kerala, there was always someone to receive us. The accommodations(膳宿) you had suggested and booked for us were excellent, so were the guides who took us around. With Ambassador's(大使) wives from so many countries like UK, Portugal, Mexico, Haiti, Singapore and Oman, they had their work cut out from the beginning. But they coped so well that I can only express thanks and admiration for their excellent work. I would especially like to mention the help we got from Mr. Himanshu Mishra and Mr. Sudhir Joshi during our stay in Delhi. They took every care to see that we were well looked after and accommodated each of our requests. This made it easier for us, having one person to communicate with.
My friends' arrivals and departures were also well organized and none of them had any complaints. We were such a disparate(全异的) group and yet all our requirements were fulfilled. All of us have talked a great deal about the trip and have referred your company's name to several people who are thinking of travelling to India in the near future.
So you may be dealing with a lot of people in New York connected with the United Nations very soon! Once again, many thanks for everything.\" Best Wishes

E Record number nominated(提名) for Nobel Peace Prize
A record 199 candidates have been nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize including Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and the ailing Pope.
This tops the former record of 194 set last year, when the $1.45 million prize went to Kenyan green activist Wangari Maathai.
\"Nominations have come from all around the world and with a broad scope of interest,\" Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told reporters Thursday.
Each year the prize is handed out at a ceremony in Oslo on Dec. 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel, who founded the prize, died in 16.
The awards committee never announces any of the candidates(候选人)but names are sometimes let out by those who make nominations including members of parliament, Nobel laureates (戴桂冠的人)and academics.
This year's list includes 36 organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, in the 60th anniversary year of the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.
Also on this year's list are Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu and Irish rock star Bono.
Lundestad said people in the United States, Germany, Sweden and Norway were
the most frequent nominators and the committee members had added a \"significant number\" to the list this week, at their first meeting of the year.
Some Nobel watchers believe the 2005 award will go to someone involved with relief efforts after the Dec. 26 tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

W: Our kitchen needs fixing up. It could really use some of the washable yellow wallpaper. Don’t you think so?
M: Yeah, I’m sure it could. Would you just take a look at the price? Text 2
W: I hear you are planning a trip for next summer, Jim. Are you going to Europe? M: I hope to go to Italy if I finish my work in time and save enough money. Text 3
W: You did a fine job cleaning my room, Mike. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it that clean. M: Oh, it was nothing. I’m glad I could help. By the way, when did you move here? W: On a rainy morning. But people say it was a lucky sign. Text 4
M: Don’t you have to drive far to work from the town every day?
W: Yes, about 30 miles. I think that it’s worth it, as long as I can get away from the pollution. Text 5
W: Are you interested in sports, Ted?
M: Yeah, I like sports a lot, especially basketball. I play with a group of people every Saturday at the park.
W: Oh, yeah? I think football is much more exciting than basketball. And I go and watch a game at least twice a month. Text 6
M: I’m tired of the bad weather. I hope it will clear up. W: So do I.
M: What id you hear the weatherman say just now?
W: He said today will remain rainy and cold. The temperature would be 10°C. And tomorrow it would be 2 degrees lower.
M: Oh, we’d better stay at home. And what about next week?
W: There will be a few more windy days and it will get even colder. M: What bad weather! Text 7
W: What do you think of the farm we visited yesterday?
M: Well, it’s a big piece of flat land. There is plenty of space to build a factory. The town needs a factory like ours. Besides, it’s easy for us to find skilled workers around there. W: That may be true, but I still feel it’s not the right place. M: What do you mean?
W: Transportation will be a big problem.
M: It’s only 7 miles form the highway. We can easily use trucks to transport our goods.
W: But it’ll cost more to transport by truck than by train. We’d better look for a place on a railway line. Text 8
M: The time has come to say goodbye.
W: So soon. It seems as if you just got here.
M: I feel that way, too.
W: It certainly has been a pleasure seeing you again and talking about old days.
M: I’ve had a nice time and I really want to thank you for spending so much time showing me the sights.
W: Oh, it was fun for me, too. It gave me a chance to get away from my everyday work and do something a little bit different.
M: Will you be out to see me next year as you promised?
W: Oh, yes. That’s our present plan unless something bad comes up. I should be there in early September.
M: I’ll be expecting you. Text 9
W: Have you seen the job in the newspaper? M: Do you mean the one in Manchester? W: Yes.
M: I saw it just now.
W: What do you think of it?
M: I think I am not the type of man to do it. W: Why do you think so?
M: They need an engineer to take care of the machine and I don’t even know anything about that kind of machine.
W: I know you are always quick to learn. I believe when you see it you will get know it well. M: Are you serious about that?
W: Sure, I am. You should have a try. M: Mm… Maybe I should. It all depends. Text 10.
M: Quiet, please. May I have all of your attention? We need to get this meeting started because we have a lot to do before graduation. Thank you all for electing me as your chairman and I will do my best to make sure we have a great graduation ceremony. I just need all of your cooperation to get everything running smoothly.
You have all been selected by your departments to plan the graduation. You should all feel honoured that your classmates thought so highly of you. Right now a sheet of paper is going around that I need you all to fill out. Please write down your name, telephone number, and what part of the graduation you would like o help organize. Please keep in mind that all the parts of the graduation require a great deal of time and devotion. So please sign up only for a part that you have time for. When you have signed the paper with your name, telephone number and part, please place the paper on my desk. At our next meeting on Friday, we will break up in groups and get to work on everything. Start thinking about how you want to organize your small groups before then. See you on Friday.
